Everyone has their own priorities in life, it’s ok to:
Focus on family, forging friendships, loved ones
Prioritize self-care, mental wellness, physical fitness
Prioritize other aspects of your personal glow up plans
Find meaning in volunteering, spend your life in the service of others
Already have a job, leaving little time for studying
Tax payers fund students up to $35k/year (75%) of the total tuition fees 💸 Source: SMU Tuition Fees
Big Brain Training 🧋¶
A training programme grounded on learning strategies from cognitive science, that are evidence-based and backed by scientific research.
This training programme feels more difficult than common ways of studying (like re-reading content, highlighting, creating notes, etc). But science has proven that it is more:
efficient (study more in less time)
effective (memorize more, understand better, remember longer)
Desirable difficulties: help to make learning stronger and deeper.
If learning feels easy, it is likely superficial, and quickly forgotten.
If learning feels effortful, it challenges and changes the brain, increasing intellectual ability.
Better learning takes place when we struggle with solving problems, before being shown the solution.
Mastery requires us to struggle to surpass our current level of ability. Struggles may lead to failures and setbacks, which feel unpleasant, but are necessary for learning.
Features:
Spacing. Distributes the learning load over time. Cramming for exams helps one pass, but is terrible for mental wellness, and content is quickly forgotten after the exam.
Recall. Focuses more on pulling out knowledge, less on pushing in knowledge.
Timeboxing. Helps with mental wellness. 40 h work week ÷ 4 mods = 10 h / mod / week. If you can’t spare 10 h, just work with whatever time you have.
Sleep. Learning takes place while sleeping. Lack of sleep results in poor learning outcomes. 🛌
